MCI want to remind all its friends that the clocks go back by an hour this weekend. As we were taught at school: Fall back for winter, Spring Forward for Summer. As we get ready for the long nights here in Scotland and hope to see the Northern Lights, we celebrate the beauty of winter.
Did you know that in Scotland during wintertime, we have almost perpetual night? We make sure that we have lots of cosy evenings in with friends and keep the lights and fires on. There is the Samhuinn Fire Festival on the 31 October. This festival is the traditional Celtic celebration of the rise of Winter and enjoyed by many.
The birds that we enjoy in Summer have now migrated from Scotland to Northern Europe, Russia and Canada. Squirrels are hiding their nuts and get ready rest up over the colder weather. The deer move from the high ground and hares and the Ptarmigans adopt their winter colours.
Changing the clocks has not always existed though, and we didn’t start doing it in the UK until 1916. Some people think it’s not necessary and in 1968, it was abolished in the UK for three years before being reinstated in 1971. Although most countries in the Northern Hemisphere adopted the system, Iceland, Belarus and Russia have not.
Regardless of where you live, you can’t stop nature preparing for the changing of the seasons.
Have a great weekend everyone and we’ll see you on Monday for our spookiest post yet!
