Today, MCI is proud to commemorate the death of one of Scotland’s kings and national hero, Robert the Bruce. Robert the Bruce, or Robert I was King of the Scots from 1306 until his death this day in history in 1329. He is most famous for leading Scotland in the First War of Scottish Independence, restoring Scotland to an independent kingdom.
Most school children in Scotland have heard of story about Robert the Bruce and the spider. After a rather bad time in the first year of Robert’s reign, he had to go into hiding in a cave (you can still visit this cave, on the west coast of Arran). Whilst sitting in the cave feeling dejected, Robert saw a spider in the corner of the cave trying to spin a web. The spider was trying to swing across the corner of the cave and just couldn’t make it across. It tried again and again, swinging from it’s silken thread, never giving up until it finally succeeded. Robert looked at the spider and realised that he needed to be as persistent as the little spider in order to succeed. He leapt to his feet and came out of hiding to lead his country to victory.
We hope you enjoyed our forage into Scottish history and enjoy the weekend.
