MCI wants to mark the date of the Battle of Hastings which took place today, Friday the 13th 1066. Many children in schools around the UK have heard of how two kings were both claiming the English throne at the same time. These kings were William and Harold. William came over to England from France and fought Harold at Hastings. After a long and bloody battle, Harold was killed and William took the throne and became known as William the Conquerer. This event changed the landscape, language and society within the UK forever.

Because William was French, as were many of the nobles that came over to fight for him, many French words made their way into the English language. Castles popped up across the country and gave England a unique landscape which attracts tourists even today. William also gave his nobles land and titles in the UK. This encouraged the nobles to stay in the UK and to develop the land and the people that farmed the land on their estates. This created the rural landscape that we recognise today.

It is important to note that academics are in discussion as to how Harold died. The Bayeaux
tapestry shows that Harold died after being hit in the eye by an arrow. However, some academics believe that the depiction of Harold’s injury was actually the result of a poor repair to the tapestry.
