Who doesn’t love a doughnut? We at MCI love them. Whether it’s glazed, filled or sprinkled, pretty much everyone has had one or might even be having one after reading this! Well, the 22nd of June is the anniversary of the holed doughnut’s invention.
Doughnuts themselves have an extremely long history that spans back to Roman times. None of them had a hole.
In 1847, Captain Hanson Gregory claimed to be the inventor of the doughnut with the hole. He was having trouble making doughnuts because they were coming out of the fryer raw in the middle and much greasier than he would have liked. In a spark of genius, he used a pepper container to punch the hole in the middle, and the doughnut with a hole was born. As soon as he returned to shore, he taught his mother the recipe. She famously made them with the spices found on her son’s boat, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon rind. The hole was stuffed with walnuts or hazelnuts. Sounds tasty!
