MCI would like to wish everyone a very happy Halloween. It has been a colourful sight in Edinburgh and Glasgow this weekend seeing so many people in fancy dress heading off to parties across Scotland. We hope you all enjoyed yourselves!
Samhain – The Ancient Halloween
For those of us with Celtic blood in our veins, this festival is very close to our hearts. Halloween originally started as Samhain, as a festival celebrating the end of the summer and the beginning of winter. It was also held on the same date as we celebrate Halloween today. During Samhain, it was thought that the border between the world of the living and the ‘Otherworld’ became thin. The souls of dead family members were believed to revisit their homes seeking hospitality. A place was even set at the table for them during the evening meal. People gathered at burial sites to welcome the dead from the Otherword as they were seen as portals between worlds. Summonsing the Dead is certainly a far cry from trick and treating with toffee apples!
Samhain / Halloween in Edinburgh
Samhain isn’t just consigned to the pages of the history books, Edinburgh still proudly holds its Samhain festival every year. This year it is being held in Holyrood Park with the promise of “more fire, acrobatics, drumming and otherworldy creatures than ever before”. So, if you want a taste of how the original Halloween / Samhain was celebrated, get a ticket, wear your cosiest things and head down for a spectacle as nearly as old as Edinburgh itself. I thoroughly recommend it and it’s suitable for the kids too.
