Today MCI wants to celebrate that in 1859, On the Origin of Species was published by Charles Darwin. It isn’t a surprise then, that this day is also celebrated annually as Evolution Day.
Darwin decided to write ‘On the Origin of Species’ after travelling around the Galápagos Islands on the HMS Beagle. He noticed that each island had similar animals and birds etc., but each type of creature was subtly different – to make it more suited to that particular island’s environment. This was especially evident in the finches that would later take Darwin’s name. This made Darwin wonder how these creatures became more suited to their environment over time. He decided that the reason was because of evolution of those creatures. He also made a link between humans and primates, which resulted in him being branded as a heretic.
As with evolution, we will continue to develop our understanding of the theory of evolution and will continue to evolve ourselves.
Have a great weekend everyone!
