MCI wants to shine a light on Robert Stirling, whose birthday is next week. This Scottish inventor, from Galston in East Ayrshire, was both a clergyman and engineer. He went to Edinburgh University and is one of the fathers of hot air engines. In 1816, he was the first to patent an air engine called (not surprisingly) the Stirling Air Engine. He also invented a heat engine, also known as the Stirling engine. Stirling was inducted to the Scottish Engineers Hall of Fame in 2014.
