This week MCI shines it spotlight on the achievements of William Murdoch. Murdoch was born near Old Cumnock in Ayrshire, here in Scotland. He invented the oscillating cylinder steam engine. Also, gas lighting is attributed to him, as well as the term “gasometer”. Thanks to him, our lives became illuminated and a lot safer. Amongst his other inventions, was the steam gun and the pneumatic tube message system. Murdoch also contributed to transport innovations. He worked on one of the first British paddle steamers to cross the English Channel and built a prototype steam locomotive and steam engine. In short, he was an extremely innovative man!
